Language

The majority of Timorese do not speak English. Tetun and Bahasa are widely spoken with Portuguese and English less well known.

  • The majority of Timorese do not speak English. Tetun and Bahasa are widely spoken with Portuguese and English less well known.
  • Learning each others language can be a basis for building and strengthening the relationship.
  • Learning each other's language shows a respect for the other person and helps facilitate good communication.
  • Ensure that the Memorandum of Understanding is written in Tetun as well as Portuguese and English.

Do expect some miscommunications to occur.

Do spend more time listening than talking

In Timor, silence often occurs during conversations. This is normal and should not be a cause for concern. Let the conversation flow and ebb.
